Blog Post 1

So far for L&I Sci 120 I have found the class overall a very fun and informative class. This is my first ethics course and I enjoy how open ended the questions and answers are. I do realize for some questions there are specific right answers if it’s pertaining to Ess or Tavani, but overall good general questions. I also think that the class has pretty good discussions as well pertaining to our topics that we are assigned. So far overall the things that we have discussed I think so far that has interested me the most is the intellectual property and intellectual commons topics in week four. I feel like the first three weeks we were still trying to gain our footing in what ethics was and how to define it; but now that we know a little bit more of a background story we are really getting into the thick of it. The ideas that Ess covers in chapter three regarding “Copying and Distributing via Digital Media” really helps break down many types of arguments that one can find.

I also enjoy how once I read something from Tavani or Ess it is usually backed up by the other as a kind of reimplementation of what I had just finished learning. Ess’ book is by far my favorite of the texts; I enjoy how he brings real world examples into play. Most of Ess’ examples so far have been relative whereas Tavani I feel I can easily get lost in. His description of utilitarianism and deontology however helped immensely. To me Tavani is more of a dictionary or fact look up, whereas Ess is just a complete lecture fulfillment. So far with some of my friends at work I have had some discussions with them regarding some digital ethics issues. I most people even though we do get a discount on electronic stuff will still pirate a vast majority of their collection.

We have also had discussion about how when we’re selling a computer and a customer asks us which one would be the best to use for torrents we are at a loss for words. Do we want to promote pirating and tell them what’s going to be fastest, or juts give them a generic answer, or do we just not tell them at all and say we do not condone illegal activity? This class has allowed me to process and think through information in a different light. It allows me to take a step back and kind of go through my mind as to what process of deduction I would assimilate with most. Usually I go for the utilitarian approach of weighing pros vs. cons as always. But some choices I find are clear cut answers to me. One particular thing in Tavani’s text that has engaged me the most is the idea of intellectual commons. He doesn’t just assimilate the commons with just digital technology he also relates it to public physical location commons that we take for granted. These areas are not owned by any one person so they are accessible to all. With a lack of commons Michael Heller is quoted as saying “…fewer and fewer intellectual resources will be available to ordinary individuals and that, as a result, our information resources will be underutilized” (Tavani 256).
